January 9, 2026, by Guy 'Guido' Allen This one-off Indian
Four, listed as a 1939 model, is anything but what is
seems. Scope the Honda CB750-Four front brake latched
on to an early 1950s chassis. Then there is the
electric start, shaft drive and torque converter. So
we're arguably talking 1930s engine in a 1950s chassis
with 1970s thinking. Oh, and it's coming up
for auction in Las Vegas, via Mecum,
late this month.
It's represented as the
creation of Bob Stark and built by Jim Mosher. Stark
was behind the long-lived and legendary Starklite
Indian dealership on the west coast of the USA. This web
piece will give you a sense of what was going
on, as will this. As for the machine, it's
part of the 1200-ish motorcycle auction coming up at
Mecum in Las Vegas, January 27-31. It's carrying an
estimate of Au$75-90,000 (US$50-60,000, GB£38-45,000,
€43-51,000). We'd have it in a
heatbeat..
To put all this into
context, a
factory-spec 1939 Four fetched $Au238,000
(US$159,500, GB£119,000, €137,000) back in 2022,
through the same auction house.
Having owned a V-twin
1947 Indian Chief, I get the appeal of any Springfield
with an electric leg and auto...see that
bike, here. In Australia, a post-war
Springfield Indian twin like the one above, in
excellent shape, is worth in the region Au$50,000
(US$33,400, GB£25,000, €29,000). ------------------------------------------------- Produced by AllMoto abn 61 400 694 722 |
