Guy 'Guido' Allen Boutique Korean maker Compass Rose has recently
launched an electric retro racer called the Ciulator ![]() Compass Rose used the recent CES technology exhibition in
Las Vegas to unveil its latest creation, the
cheekily-named Ciulator. It clearly draws inspiration from the 'dustbin'
motorcycle racers of the 1950s – see this Kevin
Cameron story from Cycle World for a
backgrounder on the breed.
The streamlining might appear to work, if the maker's
apparently optimistic claim of a 150km/h (93mph) top speed
from the modest 8.0kW (11hp) electric motor could be
supported. That's in a package weighing 140kg (309lb) and
with a low 760mm (30in) seat height. Range is claimed to be 200km (120 miles) with a two-hour
charge time.
Yes, you can buy one, but the price is high at $50,000 –
we assume that's US dollars. That being the case, the
exchange rate looks like this: Au$75,000 (US$50,000,
GB£37,400, €43,000). That price is before shipping.
Compass Rose offers another electric two-wheeler called the Dandelion, which is speed-limited to 25km/h (15mph). It's more modestly priced at Au$9500 (US$6320, GB£4720, €5450). The company's most high-profile project to date was the
de Macross Epique GT1, a retro-styled supercar launched in
2012. It was based on a carbon fibre tub with an aluminium
body, featuring gullwing doors. The driveline was a Roush
Racing 5.4lt (330ci) Ford V8 claiming 630kW (845hp)
matched to a six-speed manual transmission. With a price
of U$1.5 million, about 20-30 were expected to be built.
In the end, just one example was completed. ------------------------------------------------- Produced by AllMoto abn 61 400 694 722 |
