Andy Strapz to wind down and go touring

End of an era

March 3, 2026, by Guy 'Guido' Allen

The irrepressible Andy White, aka Andy Strapz, is to close his Australian luggage and riding gear business. That includes the innovative manufacturing side.

The whole 'Strapz' theme began about 30 years ago when, as a keen motorcyclist and a very senior casualty nurse, he got a flash of inspiration. After seeing one too many people present with serious eye injuries thanks to ocky straps that cut loose at the wrong time, he decided to make his own alternative. One that wouldn't take out your eye and would nevertheless handle much greater loads.

Enter Andy Strapz (above) of which myriad variations were made over the years. Of course the business expanded and Andy went full-time making his own gear as well as retailing other riding equipment he had tested and could recommend.

One of the greats, in our opinion, is the A Bagz series (above), a deceptively capacious travel pack with built-in straps that attaches to the rear of the bike and stays there. They are as tough as the proverbial old boots and we have used them across the world – including several Vietnam backroad trips.

As a keen adventure tourer, Andy developed loads of racks and luggage solutions for that sector which were typically tougher than the the bikes they were mounted to. That's him above on a KTM, one of a string of his machines in that class.

Along the way, he invested in his own factory and retail outlet (pictured at top).

In more recent years, Andy has been looking for someone to take over the business and that hasn't eventuated. Though a last-minute bid may be welcomed.

Instead, he has decided to spend time doing doing longer-form riding adventures and share those experiences through his new incarnation as Travels with Andy. Having spent some considerable time on the road with him, I can recommend pretty much anything he's involved with.

As a motorcyclist, I regret his decision to move on. But as a friend, I reckon it's a great choice. Happy travels, Andy...

Media release

Here is the media release, which offers further detail on what's happening:

After three decades of manufacturing high-quality motorcycle travel gear in Australia, Andy Strapz is shutting up shop.

Director and founder Andy White has announced that manufacturing of all Andy Strapz product lines will cease in a step-wise fashion as existing raw materials are exhausted.

Last Opportunity for Australian-Made Gear

Unless a White Knight emerges out of turn 12 at warp speed, the next couple of months represent the final chance to purchase or replace Australian-made Andy Strapz travel equipment – genuine pieces of Australian motorcycling heritage.

Current stock includes the full range of their gear but they are expecting a surge of demand as they work to close their factory – so get in early. All other suppliers’ stock will be sold out at the same time.

The wind-up is set to take place over the next three months with shut down to happen on June 20.  The schedule of what disappears and when can be viewed on the website at the closing-down production schedule page.

“We’ve come to a natural turning point. It’s time to close this chapter and turn the page,” Andy White said.

A New Adventure

Drawing on those three decades of designing, testing and supplying adventure travel gear, Andy is transitioning to focus exclusively on Travels with Andy – offering curated, long-format motorcycle expeditions through India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. These immersive and epic journeys are being delivered in partnership with established in-country operator Karma Yatri.
