Rare Ducati Carl
Fogarty replica at auction (Guy 'Guido' Allen, April 2025) ![]() Every now and then the collectible bike market pops up
a surprise, and this is one of them This 1998 Carl Fogarty replica Ducati 916 SPS (with a 996
engine) is pretty obscure, with just 202 produced and only
for the UK market. A low-mile example recently sold in the
USA via Bring a
Trailer for Au$90,700 (US$57,916, GB£43,700). ![]() That year, Ducati was to controversially ramp up
production of the 'regular' 916 SPS to 958 units, or more
than double its 1997 numbers, at a then sky-high price of
Au$36,000 (US$23,000, GB£17,300). A 916 Strada of the same year was priced at $27,000
(US$17,200, GB£13,000) while a Honda CBR900RR Fireblade
cost Au$16,000 (US$10,200, GB£7700). As for the Fogarty Special, it was built to homologate a
slightly-altered frame for world superbike racing. ![]() According to author Ian
Falloon, in his Ducati 916 book: "Although it only
featured a change to the rear bracing tube to increase the
airbox volume, this was an extremely successful
modification." ![]() Carl Fogarty had by this stage won two superbike
championships with the brand, in 1994-95, and came second
in the 1997 season behind John Kocinski on a Honda RC45.
In 1998 he scored number three of four championships with
the marque. The next was in 1999. Aside from the homologated frame, the Foggy replica
boasted five-spoke black Marchesini wheels (instead of the
regular 916 three-poke items in gold), a carbon-fibre seat
unit and assorted Fogarty branding along with the race
stickers. Another two Fogarty editions were to follow, in 1999 and
2000. See the Bring a
