Oddball
for the day – Batavus ![]() (Guy 'Guido' Allen,
May 2025) The stylish gem above is
none other than a 1951 Batavus Bilonet JLO F48
Combisport – snappy name! The 48cc two-stroke single
moped was part of a long and successful line produced
by the Dutch maker, which these days is better known
for its bicycles. An
online profile on the Batavus line notes:
"Post-War, the company made rapid strides and a new
project which had started out as a bicycle with a motor
was soon developed into a functionally designed
motorised two-wheeler, with front and rear-wheel
suspension for riding comfort and a creditable
performance. Long-distance rides on Batavus machines
through the United States and to places like Morocco,
Alexandria and Baghdad helped to popularise the name
outside Holland." This
example recently sold via Mecum in the USA
for a very respectable Au$15,400 (US$9900,
GB£7400). ![]() Meanwhile you can see the styling
approach changed somewhat drastically by the time
the 1976 Mobat (above) was introduced! See a Batavus moped profile via Cybermotorcycle. ***
